Abstract

Abstract

This paper contains the results of an analysis of the influence of postmodernism based
on the theory of Jean-Francois Lyotard in the scope of today’s sermons. This is motivated by a
paradigm shift regarding the truth and interest in sermons in the church. This phenomenon is
described as a result of the postmodern era. For Lyotard, postmodernism is a change in the status
of science that rejects the credibility of metanarrative legitimacy. The Bible as a source of
preaching the truth is Christian metanarrative. Thus, today’s preaching can’t be separated from
the influence of postmodernism. Through the analysis process using a non-experimental qualitative
research methodology with a literature study method, it was found that postmodernism according
to Lyotard's theory has an impact on today's sermons. The impact does not change the status of
Bible truth, but in a shift in meaning, narrative fragmentation, and language game that is
contained and used in the preaching of today's sermons
